YPI P3C Panel: Women in the Workplace: The “broken rung” as experienced by women in infrastructure
McKinsey’s Women in the Workplace study shows that women continue to be underrepresented at every level. To change the numbers, companies need to focus where the real problem is. We often talk about the “glass ceiling” that prevents women from reaching senior leadership positions. In reality, the biggest obstacle that women face is much earlier in the pipeline, at the first step up to manager. Fixing this “broken rung” is the key to achieving parity. This panel will present research from the Women in the Workplace study to ground the discussion. It will explore the experiences of women maneuvering through the broken rung in the infrastructure industry and the strategies they employed. We will discuss what the broken rung looks like for women today and delve into the strategies that companies can adopt to break the rung and provide more advancement opportunities to women.
